Nova Scotia is launching a new medical program to certify internationally trained doctors more quickly. Premier Tim Houston announced that a Halifax-based clinic will assess international medical graduates and provide primary care to 2,500 patients. The program aims to reduce assessment time to 12 weeks from the current 18 months. Graduates will receive a license to practice in Nova Scotia and must commit to a three-year service agreement in the province. The program will issue approximately 45 licenses per year, an increase from the previous five-year average of 39.
